"Have You Been Down The Toothpaste Aisle Lately?

One of the most talked about subjects around NIHBA lately is the difficulty in getting clients to contract  and once you get them that far than getting them to sign off on selections in a timely manner.

I've been telling some in our industry how I liken it to shopping for toothpaste. I remember when I was growing up there was only a few different choices for toothpaste. I remember Crest and Colgate. Then, all of a sudden, there was a brand new choice, Aim toothpaste. Wow, how would I ever decide which one to use with so many choices? Fast forward a few, okay several, decades and look at today's choices in toothpaste. Do you have any idea of how many toothpaste choices Crest alone has offers? Thirty-nine! That number includes several different toothpastes targeted at kids (and certain adult Star Wars groupies) but you get the idea. This doesn't even take into account the many other brands available and their offerings.

 My point in all of this is that consumers have come to expect incredible amounts of choices. The internet has made those choices more available. This is both good and bad for the builder members of our association. The good is that because our association is mostly made up of custom builders and remodelers consumers looking for choices in building should generally find one of us to build with as opposed to production builders who greatly limit the choices offered to consumers. The bad part is the amount of time and work involved in meeting with, researching, and pricing all of these choices.

 It's great to be involved in a trade association like NIHBA where you can talk with others who are in the exact same boat as you are. I'd like to thank each of  you who have helped me with advice benefitting my business and I hope to help each of you with yours.
