Amidst all the current turmoil in our economy and
more specifically the connection to our housing market, it appears that
we have the attention of most major economies throughout the world – for
better or worse.
While still difficult at best to forecast exactly how
our market in the Chicago region will fare in the next 6-12 months, it
seems that our membership can not make that determination—however we can
prepare ourselves for the eventual turnaround. One way to plan ahead is
to use the time today to continue to utilize the NAHB educational
courses available locally, and obtain various professional
certifications. These include CRB,
CAPS, CGR, and CMB, in addition to others. It is
apparent to me that competition within our industry and local geography
will heighten as we exit this temporary setback. Knowledge is power and
as we move forward in this new global economy, all of us must be
prepared in order to survive.
Another ongoing concern, which unfortunately does not
seem to have been abated by the recent housing slump, is the continued
legislative activity by almost all branches of government, often focused
on the construction industry as a way to control growth or increase
revenues. As I view these non-ending issues, it appears that all of us
must step back and take a hard look at the future of our individual
businesses, and the need for political advocacy for our industry—from
the national down to the local level. Currently, as most of you know,
regional and local advocacy is being hotly debated within several of our
local area organizations. Become informed and participate, lest
decisions may be made without your input. Remember, NIHBA exists for
You, its members. Attend a local Government Affairs meeting, or other
committee meetings regarding education, publicity, membership,
remodeling, etc.
I also strongly urge any who are interested in
learning more about the legislative process and pending legislation in
Springfield to join many of us for Lobby Day on April 16th.
Contact the office if you are interested. Till next month.

Jim Buoy
